1 Eggs Float? By:Katie Benedum

2 My Question! I want ot know if an egg floats in salt water!
I will need salt, water, an egg, and a tall cup.

3 The Reason I Picked My Project!!
The reason I picked “does an egg float in saltwater” is because I have wondered if things float in water depending on how dense the water is. I wanted to do a household item, and picked eggs because it was the only thing in my fridge that made sense to see if it would float.

4 My Hypothesis! I predict that the egg will float when I put in 3 tbs of salt. If so then I will learn that 3 tbs of salt will make an egg float, which I didn’t know.

5 My Variables!! Independent : I make the water more dense with the salt
Dependent : If the egg will float or not Constants : Amount of water and size of cup, also the type of egg I use

6 My Procedure!!! First I had to gather the materials
Next I water about halfway in the cup Then I added about 6 tbs of salt in the same cup And stirred gently until the salt wouldn’t dissolve anymore Then add plain water all the way to the top of the cup Now add the egg and see what happens!! Repeat steps 2-7

7 My Data!!! 2 tbs 3 tbs 6 tbs Amount of salt added
If the egg floated or not No Yes

8 My Conclusion! Does an egg float in saltwater? In my experiment I had to put 2,3 and 6 tbs of salt in a half filled glass of water, then put normal water to the top of the saltwater and put the egg in the water gently.I did my experiment 3 times once with 2 tbs of salt then 3 tbs and finally 6 tbs of salt. Only the cup with 6 tbs of salt in it the egg floated. My data does not support my hypothesis because I said that 3 tbs of salt would make the egg float, but it didn’t it took 6 tbs of salt to make an egg float.

9 My Conclusion! (Part 2) I learned that with 6 tbs of salt would make an egg float in water. I also learned that the denser the water is the better things will float. And that if water absorbs all it can it won’t absorb anything else because the molecule is to full so it can’t absorb anything else. The only problem I had was trying to find out what table to use, but I figured it out. I would not change anything about my lab, I enjoyed it and it was all educational at the same time.
