1 Revised Questionnaire EU Survey Eurostat, 21-22 June, 2010 Prof Jan Van Dijk

2 Changes in questionnaire after pilots
Main changes Changes in questionnaire after pilots Section G on violence integrated into screeners Reduced number of questions – e.g Fear of crime Security precautions Personal and household characteristics Details of victimisation incidents More household and personal characteristics (Eurostat)

3 Main changes Further changes after April 2010 Task Force meeting, based on plenary discussion and 8 written comments from countries Some “ask all” and filtered questions added Roughly equal number questions deleted Some questions reworded Interview instructions amended

4 Estimated duration of new questionnaire
Introduction (minutes) A Fears/worries B Ownership C Screeners D Victim details (on average) E Opinions F Co-variates (!) Total (17 to 28 minutes)

5 The current length is just acceptable for CATI and CAWI but should not be expanded
Explanations for changes are given in the annotated version The questionnaire may not fully satisfy the specifications of all countries but seems to reflect the emerging consensus of the majority Any radical change is likely to prove contentious

6 Introduction and Section A: Fear & worries
There are now five “ask all” questions 1 The golden oldie on safety after dark 2 Likelihood of burglary 3 Worries about contact crime by strangers 4 Worries about family and contact crime 5 Worries about terrorism

7 Section B: Victimisation screeners
Deleted: Screeners on car vandalism, household vandalism threats and identity theft Added Screener for second home burglaries (2 questions) Restructured Questions on sexual violence and violence - to accommodate Italian and French demands Separate screeners for incidents by (i) strangers, and (ii) people you knew, including (ex) partners. In total four screeners New Interview instructions on confidentiality

8 Questions on violence between intimates have been successfully used in CATI - conducted surveys in Canada, USA, UK and Sweden. Ideally, the new questionnaire (including its new screeners on violence) should be pilot tested in some EU countries

9 Section D: Victimisation details
As data collection is mainly to take place in second semester 2013, we have restructured questions on timing to identify victimisations over past 12 months more accurately Questions on seriousness deleted but replaced by question for burglaries on value stolen questions on emotional problems remain Question on burglary insurance added Question on hate crime restricted to ethnicity (for sake of clarity)

10 Section D: Opinions Some items on safety precautions deleted Old question on avoidance behavior added Type of gun deleted Co-variate of lifestyle (going out) deleted Length of sentence deleted

11 Section F: Personal & household information
Eurostat variables added (25% of interview time) Perceived immigrant status deleted (place of birth of parents instead)
