Noun Definition – the name of a person, place, thing, or idea Examples – Athens Drive, school, classroom, teacher, Ms. Turner, paper, physics, coffee Mary uses a blue pen for her notes. *Nouns can be common or proper.

Pronoun Definition – a pronoun is used in place of a noun or noun phrase to avoid repetition. Examples – I, you, we, us, them, her, him, etc. I want her to dance with me. *The word or phrase the pronoun replaces is called the antecedent.

Adjective Definition - Describes, modifies, or gives more information about a noun or pronoun. Examples – stunning, hilarious, confusing, aquamarine, delicious, etc. The little girl has a pink hat. ***The articles a, an, and the can be categorized as adjectives. These articles indicate specific items or objects. A is used before consonants and an before vowels.

Verb Definition – shows an action or state of being Examples – Live, go, speak, is, are, ran, jump, write, read, etc. I listened to the word and then repeated it with the class.

Adverb Definition – Modifies a verb, adjective, or other adverb. It tells how (often), when, where, etc. Examples – slowly, very, always, well, too Yesterday, I quickly ate my lunch.

Preposition Definition – Shows the relationship of a noun, noun phrase, or pronoun to another word. Examples – Behind, above, at, on, beside, with, etc. I left my keys on the counter for you.

Conjunction Definition – Joins two words, ideas, or phrases together and shows how they’re connected. Examples – For, and , nor, but, or, yet, so, because, until, if I was hot and tired but I still finished the race.

Interjection Definition – A word or phrase that expresses a strong emotion. It is a short exclamation. Examples – Hey! Ouch! Woah! Oh? “Wow! I passed my English exam!”
