Work is the transfer of energy that results from applying a force over a distance
Work is done by forces that cause movement
The force applied and the distance covered MUST be in the same direction, or no work is done.

You do one joule of work if you push an object a distance of 1 meter with a force of 1 Newton
1 J = 1 N•m

A crane lifts a 50 N crate 2 m. How much work does the crane do?
A teacher carries a 250 N pile of textbooks across the room 3 m. How much work does the teacher do?
