Matter exists in different physical states
LESSON 1.4 Matter exists in different physical states
2
What determines states of matter?
Def: forms in which matter can exist Ex: solid, liquid, gas Molecules of a substance do not change, the arrangement of the molecules does change
5
Circle your level of understanding of these concepts:
6
Solids Fixed volume and fixed shape Particles are close together
Particles are attached and cannot move to another location Particles vibrate in one fixed place
7
Solids Particles in solids usually have less space between them than liquids Gas Liquid Solid
8
Solids H₂O is an exception with more space between molecules of ice than between molecules of water This causes ice to ‘float’
9
Circle your level of understanding of these concepts:
10
Liquids Fixed volume but no fixed shape
Takes on the shape of a container
11
Liquids Particles attract and are close together
Particles are not fixed in one place and can move from place to place
12
Liquids Volume of liquid can be measured
Molecules in a liquid are not tightly attached allowing them to flow
13
Circle your level of understanding of these concepts:
14
Gases No fixed volume or shape Takes on shape and volume of container
15
Gases Particles not close together, can move in any direction
Space between particles changes easily
16
Gases Adding gas to a rigid container does not change the volume, it just causes less space between particles
17
Gases Gas molecules bouncing off one another create pressure
Temperature affects their movement and pressure
