(A,D) nonperfused; (B,E) 1-hour ischemia; (C-F) 6-hour ischemia. Arrows mark infarction edges. The Annals of Thoracic Surgery , DOI: ( /S (01)02642-X)

Fig 5 Sections of myocardium stained with Masson’s trichrome from a sheep after 6 hours of ischemia and 2 (A) and 12 (B) weeks of reperfusion. The epicardium is uppermost. After 2 weeks all myocytes in the infarct are necrotic (bluish gray). No viable myocytes are present in the epicardium. Early fibrosis and granulation tissue is visible. After 12 weeks of reperfusion, a band of viable myocytes (stained red) is present in the epicardium. Scar tissue is stained blue (×10 before 10% reduction). Fig 6 Myocyte ultrastructure in a sheep after 6 hours of ischemia and 2 (A and B) and 12 weeks (C) of reperfusion. At 2 weeks (A), occasional viable myocytes are visible in the subepicardial region of the infarct. Viable myocytes are smaller. Cellular cytoplasm contains mitochondria, sarcoplasmic reticulum, and thick filaments with z-bands. The thick filaments with z-bands are seen predominantly at the periphery of the cell (×10,500 before 17% reduction). (B) At higher magnification mitochondria and filaments with z-bands are visible (×12,000 before 17% reduction). (C) Electron micrograph of an epicardial myocyte from a sheep after 6 hours of ischemia and 12 weeks reperfusion. The myocyte contains numerous mitochondria and myofilaments (×4,500 before 17% reduction). The Annals of Thoracic Surgery , DOI: ( /S (01)02642-X)
