1 Mendel’s Work Continued…
Genetics Mendel’s Work Continued…

2

3 Genes Genes are inherited in pairs; one gene from each parent.
The different form of genes are called alleles. For Example: The gene for height in some plants has two forms (tall and short). One allele is for tall stems The other allele is for short stems

4

5 Pea Plant Alleles Each pea plant inherits a combination of two alleles from it’s parents. Two alleles for tall stems Two alleles for short stems One allele for tall stems and one allele for short stems

6

7 Example Question The results were four tall offspring.
These offspring could also be called hybrids

8 Hybrids A hybrid is made of a combination of dominant and recessive traits (mixed) Pure tall + pure short = hybrid offspring

9 Principles of Genetics
Traits pass from parents to offspring Gene pairs determine traits. One gene pair comes from the gamete of each parent. (A gamete is the sex cell of the parent – either the sperm or the egg) Gene pairs are inherited separately for each trait

10 Challenge Question Can a short pea plant be a hybrid? Why or why not?
