An algorithm is a procedure for solving a problem.
Pass in your H.W. (module 2 packet and missing work) Pick up a NEW packet On front cover of packet, fill in NAME, CLASS and DATE. Copy the two items below onto the cover of your NEW packet (anywhere is fine) An algorithm is a procedure for solving a problem.

Today’s Objective: I will be able to estimate, make a table of values, and use place value So I can divide multi-digit numbers using the division algorithm. I will demonstrate my understanding when I can verbally discuss with my partners how to calculate the quotient and write the solutions of 6 or more mathematical problems with at least 80% accuracy. (6.NS.B.2)

5
Mini-Lesson Practice Closing H.W. update & T.T.G.
6
Mini Lesson: … that when we “bring down” the next digit in the algorithm, we are distributing, recording, and shifting to the next place value.
7
Mini Lesson: Place Value
6 thousands (1, , , , , ,000) 2 hundreds ( ) 1 tens (10 ) 4 ones ( ) Standard Form: 6,214
8
ESTIMATING : pg. 55 70,000 ÷ ? ………….….70,072…………….? 80,000 70,000
9
ESTIMATING : pg. 55 70,000 ÷ 20 ? ………….….19…………….? 20 10
10
The quotient of 70,072 and19 should be about 3,500.
ESTIMATING : pg. 55 70,000 ÷ 20 Divide each number by ten for efficiency. The quotient of 70,072 and19 should be about 3,500.
11
ESTIMATING : pg. 55 Because the divisor,19 ,is not a friendly number , a good strategy is to create a table of values to show the multiples of 19.

Classwork: pg. 60 Students will estimate, make a table of values, and use place value to divide multi-digit numbers using the division algorithm to work independently on the odd problems on page 60 using their white boards. Students will then turn and check their answers with their neighbor. Finally there will be a whole class check-in
26
Explain in your own words how the division algorithm works.
Closing: Explain in your own words how the division algorithm works. The division algorithm shows successive (one after the other) estimates of the quotient organized by place value, …..other answers…… the division algorithm breaks one large division problem into several smaller ones organized by place value.

Accommodations Read or reread presentation or activity directions, as needed or after prompting Use examples to model and act as a guide for emerging learners
