What is Running Start? “Running Start” is a program operated through the University of Hawaii School System which allows High School students to earn dual credit for high school and for college at the University’s campus or online through the University’s system.

What Classes Can I Take? *Any “100” level course at any University of Hawaii Community College- check online options as well *Visit the schools’ websites for course information (WCC, LCC, HCC, KCC, Ect.) *Check with grade-level counselor to see what graduation requirement the course will count for.

What Do I Need To Know About Running Start “Dual Credit” Classes?
High school AND college credit are awarded The courses are college courses operated at the college or online, not at Kahuku’s campus **Early college classes may be offered at Kahuku, this is different than Running Start ** 1 college course awards 3 college credits and 1 high school credit Running Start courses are completed in ONE semester, not one year as a typical 1 credit high school courses are Courses may begin/end at different times than Kahuku courses Timing of college courses can affect high school schedule Students can move onto higher level courses after completing level 100 College credit fees apply, minors cannot apply for financial aid but CAN apply for the Gear Up Scholarship prior to April 7th, 2017

Apply for Running Start and the “Gear Up” Scholarship
*The “Gear Up” Scholarship allows students who qualify for free and reduced lunch to have ONE course and books free of charge per semester if scholarship awarded STEP 1: When applying for Running Start, students’ applications are immediately entered into the Gear Up Scholarship if done prior to April 7, 2017 STEP 2: Students MUST go through all application procedures as if they are attending the community college as a student. How To Plan *Apply for Running Start ASAP if interested in taking courses next school year. *Research current course offerings, these courses will change in the fall but it is best to see what is offered now to get an idea of the course list *Register for school year like all other students, once application for Running Start is processed and courses are selected, counselor can adjust KHIS schedule “Life isn’t about finding yourself.
