Textile: Industry dealing with woven cloth. Capital: Money invested in businesses. Partnership: An agreement where two or more people own a business and pooled their own money. Corporation: This raises money by selling shares of the company to investors.

5) Industrial Revolution: A time in history characterized by the rise of machine power rather than animal or human power. “Necessity is the mother of invention”

6) Mill Town: A town whose entire social life revolved around the factory or mill. 7) Specialized Worker:A worker in a factory who had one specific job that they would repeat throughout the workday. 8) Interchangeable Parts: A type of part that would fit into a machine and could be easily removed or replaced.

13) Imperialism: A type of relationship between countries in which one nation directly or indirectly controls the government or the economy of another nation. 14) Colony: A direct rule of another nation by the “Mother Nation.” 15) Protectorate: Where the local people have their own government, but the imperial government controls the military and can tell local rulers what to do.

20) Sphere of Influence: A region where only one imperial power has the right to invest or trade. 21) Panama Canal: A major construction project that made it possible to ship goods from the Atlantic to the Pacific much easier than it had been in the past.

16) Nationalism: The belief that the needs of one particular country are more important than the needs of the entire world. 17) The Opium War: A war between China and Great Britain over the trade of an addictive drug. This led to greater British trading rights in Chinese ports. Extraterritoriality: When citizens of one country are subject only to their country’s laws even if they live in another land. The Boxer Rebellion: An uprising in China where foreigners were attacked, especially Chinese Christians. The U.S. sent troops to end the fighting.
