Promoting Volunteering Opportunities
11
Promoting Volunteering Opportunities
What Who Where When Why How are we promoting? do we want to reach? will they find out about us? do we want to reach them? are we doing all this? will we get volunteers?
12
Promoting Volunteering Opportunities
What – A clear volunteer role that answers two key questions What difference will I make? What’s in it for me?
13
Promoting Volunteering Opportunities
Who – Create a volunteer “Avatar” Your ideal volunteer for this role: Skills Qualifications Personality Demographics More detail from this marketing blog:
14
Promoting Volunteering Opportunities
Where – Placing your message The ideal volunteer can be found at: Home Their place of work On social media (or elsewhere online) At your event (or someone else’s) Inside your organisation Among your existing supporters and contacts The Volunteer Centre
15
Promoting Volunteering Opportunities
When – will they be receptive to your message? When they want to: Give something back Get a (new) job Make a change in their health or lifestyle Have work experience for college Support your cause
16
Promoting Volunteering Opportunities
Why – will they respond to your message? Because you have hit enough of the “triggers” for them to become interested
17
Promoting Volunteering Opportunities
How? Consistently Don’t just get out there when you want, or (worse still) urgently need new volunteers. You need to be volunteer friendly all year round, building a community around your work – however small. Put stuff up and out regularly, make a simple comms plan (what, and who by) for the year or next few months and stick to it!
18
Promoting Volunteering Opportunities
How? Community Volunteers often support more than one organisation. Build (or join) a community around your area of interest. Use online by tagging other similar organisations and people in your blogs and social media, and sharing theirs. Ask if you can go in people’s newsletters, and would they like to go in yours?
19
Promoting Volunteering Opportunities
How? Express your personality People want to know there are real people behind the materials and feeds. Don’t be scared of your own voice, and giving a personality to the organisation. If ever in doubt, write how you talk – and / or how your community talks to each other. .
20
Promoting Volunteering Opportunities
How? A picture is worth a thousand words Are your marketing materials overly text heavy? Could you shorten the text, and can you add a great photo or image? Work to build a bank of strong, indicative photos that portray what you do really well – and that (important) you have permission to use.
21
Promoting Volunteering Opportunities
How? Get people talking Word of mouth promotion is very powerful. Get your existing volunteers on board and think about what makes YOU look at, click in and ultimately do something with a physical ad or social media post. Consider eye catching visuals, whether you can use a video or gif, and always ask your audience to take action.
22
Promoting Volunteering Opportunities
How? Reuse and Recycle Having made all the effort to create and store great visuals, messages and articles – don’t just promote or use them once! Find multiple uses for your content. Have you shared them on all the relevant social (and other) media? Can you do so more than once –say if there’s a relevant news hook, or it might reach a new audience.

Promoting Volunteering Opportunities
