1 Bonding and Electronic Structure of Reconstructed Surface Alloys
Janet E. Kirsch, Department of Chemistry, University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, La Crosse, WI 54601 By analyzing the results of Fenske-Hall band structure calculations on the series of structures shown above, we have determined that the clock reconstruction of an Al/Pd(100) surface alloy strengthens the Pd-Pd bonding within the surface layer and reinforces the bonding interactions between second layer Al atoms and surface layer Pd atoms. We are in the process of carrying out a similar analysis on Pd/Cu(100), a surface alloy system that is known to undergo a similar type of reconstruction.
