2 Static arts 2D static arts: paintings, drawings, maps, etc.
3D static arts: sculpture, art installations, buildings, etc.

3 2d art Let’s begin by looking at paintings and other manifestations of two-dimensional art.

4 analysing artefacts Visible details: images, colour, light, etc.
Invisible details: historical context, artist’s background, etc.

5 Ancient art Originally ancient art was focused almost exclusively on religious subjects. The artists are often unknown.

6 ancient art works Famous icons, mosaics, frescoes, etc.
E.g. Ravenna, Aquileia. Recognise major works: historical and geographical provenance, where to find the works now.

7 renaissance art Originally Renaissance art was also focused on religious or mythical themes. This was also a means of communication for a largely illiterate population.

8 Renaissance art works Veronese, Botticelli, etc.
Recognise major works: historical and geographical provenance, where to find the paintings now.

9 impressionist art works
Monet, Millais, Cèzanne, etc. Recognise major works: historical and geographical provenance, where to find the paintings now.

10 abstract art works Picasso, Mondrian, Klee, etc.
Recognise major works: historical and geographical provenance, where to find the paintings now.

11 Recognition of static arts
3D art. Basic knowledge of art history. Recognise ancient, Renaissance, modern abstract, etc.

12 ancient sculpture Originally ancient sculpture was focused on religious or ‘political’ themes e.g. wooden or stone sculptures of the Virgin or stone statues of emperors, ancient gods, etc.

13 ancient sculpture Egyptian, Greek, Roman artefacts.
Recognise major works: historical and geographical provenance, where to find the sculptures now.

14 renaissance sculpture
Michelangelo, Donatello, etc. Recognise major works: historical and geographical provenance, where to find the sculptures now.

15 modern abstract sculpture
Henry Moore, Picasso, Dalí, etc. Recognise major works: historical and geographical provenance, where to find the sculptures now.

16 Recognising important landmarks
Nelson’s Column, The Colosseum, The Atomium, etc. Recognise major landmarks: historical background, geographical location, physical details.

17 minor landmarks London letter box, New York taxi, Venetian gondola, etc. Recognise (or research) lesser known landmarks: historical background, geographical location, physical details.

18 Linking art to museums Know (or research) what major art galleries and museums contain.

19 selection Choose 2D and 3D art works and landmarks/buildings/objects to study and analyse with a view to describing them.
