2. Why a Shared Service?
There is no single “solution” easily available and that meets requirements for Universities to enable better management of research data
More effective Research Data Management must happen to comply with Funder Mandates, ensure data is not lost, and to realise a whole range of positive benefits
A shared service (provided by Jisc) seems to offer a number of benefits:
Cost savings and efficiencies
Common approaches and practice – do this together
Research system standardisation and interoperability ( do it once rather than many times! , & also address it across essential systems so we can key once and share)

E2E ingest to preservation at individual institution level

Metadata (descriptive, technical, event, and resource use) captured in the messaging layer to allow reporting and analytics
Extensible to allow other systems that comply with message API and data model.

6. RDSS Development Priorities

First priority is research data
However research data is not good enough on it’s own for research publication the ideal is to store, or link to the complete research package
Research output (Article/Thesis etc.)

Provenance metadata (method)
Without this research is often not re-usable or repeatable.
Therefore we are aware that we are providing preservation systems that are tailored to deal with all kinds of digital objects and data.
We are exploring use cases and pilots for objects beyond research data.
OA is next big one
Work with SSI, DPC and pilots on other content e.g. software other
Look across the institution for other university records and special collections that can make use of the system.
Also get archivists more involved in scientific output.

7. Jisc vision: supporting UK open research

Building on RDSS, Jisc open science repository service will host institutional repositories, support their integration with local services such as single sign-on, but also embed them into a managed information environment that will:
enable universities to offer a more trusted and simpler solution to their researchers
widen the dissemination of UK research
reduce the costs of adhering to open science policies for the university
