Our task today is . . . To apply the terms of argument – claim, data, warrant, ethos, logos, and pathos – to arguments made in images and in print.

You will be graded in two ways
1. Completion of the written activities given to you – 30 points Participation in classroom discussion – 10 points Each person is expected to contribute three times to the classroom discussion.

Argument in Print Read the excerpt from Reverend Al Sharpton’s eulogy for Mike Brown. As you read, annotate the speech looking for the CLAIMS that Sharpton makes, the DATA he uses, and the WARRANTS that propel his ideas. Complete the questions about the speech given to you. You may work in groups on this. You have 20 minutes to complete this work.

Argument and Bias Some argument may make claims that are biased or slanted to one side or the other. Sometimes bias can affect the claims and the warrants of the arguments. For instance, a person who is an animal activist is probably biased against chicken farms, so an argument made to support or deny a chicken farm’s permit to do business might be impacted.

Argument in Print Read and annotate the article looking for claim, data, and warrant. What is the central claim? What bias, if any, exists? How does this bias affect the warrant of the speaker?
