3 The Speeches Of Elihu 32:1 – 37:24
The Dialogue Job 3:1 – 42:6 The Speeches Of Elihu 32:1 – 37:24 He feels the need to defend God 36:1-16 He believes there is still much to be said “on God’s behalf” v. 2 God is mighty, has used His power vv. 5-6 He deals with the righteous & wicked accordingly He is active in political affairs of men vv. 7-12 He rewards & punishes based on man’s conduct

4 The Speeches Of Elihu 32:1 – 37:24
The Dialogue Job 3:1 – 42:6 The Speeches Of Elihu 32:1 – 37:24 He feels the need to defend God 36:1-16 He judges the “godless” and He delivers the “afflicted” vv Elihu then appeals to Job Ù perhaps God is using Job’s present situation to lead Job out of distress into a place of “no constraint” and “fatness” v. 16

5 The Speeches Of Elihu 32:1 – 37:24
The Dialogue Job 3:1 – 42:6 The Speeches Of Elihu 32:1 – 37:24 He continues his appeal to Job 36:17-23 Instead of being delivered, Job was being judged v. 17 Ù He now sounds like “the 3” Elihu then advises Job not to “scoff” at such judgment…it is from God v. 18 He also cautions Job to stop yearning for the “night” v cp. 3:3-10

6 The Speeches Of Elihu 32:1 – 37:24
The Dialogue Job 3:1 – 42:6 The Speeches Of Elihu 32:1 – 37:24 He continues his appeal to Job 36:17-23 He concludes his appeal by telling Job “Be careful, do not turn to evil” vv Job needs to stop judging God for how he perceives God is treating him

7 The Speeches Of Elihu 32:1 – 37:24
The Dialogue Job 3:1 – 42:6 The Speeches Of Elihu 32:1 – 37:24 He exalts God’s power 36:24 – 37:24 Elihu exalts the powerful “God of judgment” he has just presented to Job Instead of judging God, Elihu tells Job he needs to “exalt” Him 36:24 “God is exalted and we do not know Him; the number of His years is unsearchable.” 36:26

8 The Speeches Of Elihu 32:1 – 37:24
The Dialogue Job 3:1 – 42:6 The Speeches Of Elihu 32:1 – 37:24 He exalts God’s power 36:24 – 37:24 It is at this point of the book many students believe an actual storm was brewing, and from its activities Elihu referenced God’s majestic and awesome power 36:27 – 37:21 It is also believed to be the “whirlwind” out of which Jehovah would speak 38:1

9 The Speeches Of Elihu 32:1 – 37:24
The Dialogue Job 3:1 – 42:6 The Speeches Of Elihu 32:1 – 37:24 He exalts God’s power 36:24 – 37:24 An actual storm? 36:27 – 37:21 This cannot be concluded with total certainty Therefore, we will not say it is certain However, it is plausible enough to at least be considered…each must decide for himself

10 The Speeches Of Elihu 32:1 – 37:24
The Dialogue Job 3:1 – 42:6 The Speeches Of Elihu 32:1 – 37:24 He exalts God’s power 36:24 – 37:24 Therefore, Job should understand man cannot “find the Almighty” 37:23a He will not do violence to justice 37:23b He won’t act “inappropriately” toward those who live justly…something Job has repeatedly charged God with doing re: his situation

11 The Speeches Of Elihu 32:1 – 37:24
The Dialogue Job 3:1 – 42:6 The Speeches Of Elihu 32:1 – 37:24 He exalts God’s power 36:24 – 37:24 Man should simply fear this God and not be “wise of heart” (wise in his own opinions) 37:24 cp. Prov 3:5-7 God will not have any regard for such if they should call upon Him

12 All human speakers are finished
The Dialogue Job 3:1 – 42:6 All human speakers are finished Job - A righteous man who suffered immensely - He sought answers from God re: his suffering…he never got such a reply - He did receive blistering judgments from “friends” who came to comfort him

13 All human speakers are finished
The Dialogue Job 3:1 – 42:6 All human speakers are finished Job - He correctly refused the judgments from “the friends” - His error came in calling God into question for how he felt He was treating him, and also how He ruled morally in the world

14 All human speakers are finished
The Dialogue Job 3:1 – 42:6 All human speakers are finished The “3 friends” - Men beholding to their “theology” - They were sure of their “wisdom” - They did speak some truths, but mostly misapplied what they said to Job, accusing him without any proof of his “sin”

15 All human speakers are finished
The Dialogue Job 3:1 – 42:6 All human speakers are finished Elihu - He seemed to be more sympathetic towards Job than were the “3 friends” - He heard statements from both Job & “the 3 friends” and endeavored to correct all of them…he spoke both good & bad

16 The weakness of all 5 human speakers is evident
The Dialogue Job 3:1 – 42:6 The weakness of all 5 human speakers is evident - They were all limited in their wisdom - They were all guilty of assuming things without any proof

17 The only way to settle this dialogue is to let God have the final word
The Dialogue Job 3:1 – 42:6 The only way to settle this dialogue is to let God have the final word - Only with Him does true wisdom exist cp. Job 28 - When God is allowed to speak “the final word”…let all recognize what He says as “absolute truth” cp. Jn 17:17 Heb 6:18

18 The Speeches Of Jehovah 38:1 – 41:34
The Dialogue Job 3:1 – 42:6 The Speeches Of Jehovah 38:1 – 41:34 Remember…during the course of his own speeches, Job had raised questions about & had even made charges against God In his agony he had suffered through God’s silence to those questions God will now begin to answer Job

19 The Speeches Of Jehovah 38:1 – 41:34
The Dialogue Job 3:1 – 42:6 The Speeches Of Jehovah 38:1 – 41:34 Notice that He does not directly respond to what Job had requested Ù the reason why he has been suffering God spends His whole speech defending His right to act as Sovereign, as seems best to Him

20 The Speeches Of Jehovah 38:1 – 41:34
The Dialogue Job 3:1 – 42:6 The Speeches Of Jehovah 38:1 – 41:34 It appears God initially refers to Job in 38:2 Job had “darkened counsel by words without knowledge” Ù he had “darkened” God’s purpose by casting Him in an unfavorable light God then challenges Job 38:3

21 The Speeches Of Jehovah 38:1 – 41:34
The Dialogue Job 3:1 – 42:6 The Speeches Of Jehovah 38:1 – 41:34 God questions Job on creation 38:4-38 “Explain the earth’s foundation” vv. 4-7 “Explain how the sea stays put” vv. 8-11 “Explain the dawning of each day” vv “Explain the vast detail of all that has been created” vv

22 The Speeches Of Jehovah 38:1 – 41:34
The Dialogue Job 3:1 – 42:6 The Speeches Of Jehovah 38:1 – 41:34 God questions Job on creation 38:4-38 “Explain light & darkness, or tell Me about the snow or hail” vv God even uses sarcasm on Job v. 21 “Explain how the earth receives all its precipitation” vv “Explain the heavens, outer space vv

23 The Speeches Of Jehovah 38:1 – 41:34
The Dialogue Job 3:1 – 42:6 The Speeches Of Jehovah 38:1 – 41:34 God questions Job on creation 38:4-38 “Explain the control of the clouds vv What has been God’s point to Job thus far? The things He has mentioned are all beyond Job’s knowledge, ability to understand. How does this connect to Job’s situation?
