1 What is this? Look at all the words and markings on this piece of paper. Can you figure out what most of them mean? See if you can figure out why this person sent his message this way instead of writing a letter.

2 In a few minutes, you’ll be reading telegrams (cables) Governor George Wallace and President Kennedy sent each other in June, They concern an important event that took place at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. A plaque commemorating the event is located on the campus.

The plaque says President Kennedy “federalized the National Guard.” What do you think that means and why do you think he did that?
