Medium Access Control (MAC) requirements for the BAN
SungHyup Lee and YangMoon Yoon KORPA (Korea Radio Promotion Agency) I have pleasure to introduce myself. My name is SungHyup Lee, I’m Senior Engineer at KORPA. I will talk about “Medium Access Control (MAC) requirements for the BAN.”

Purpose and Contents Contents
This document presents MAC requirements for the BAN Contents Outline of MAC requirements for the BAN MAC issues on BAN Relationship between BAN and WPAN MAC for WPAN Intra / Inter body communications Considerations of MAC protocol for the BAN This document presents the MAC requirements for the BAN The contents of my presentation consist of 6 parts. First, I introduce the outline of MAC protocol for BAN. Second, I explain MAC issues on BAN. Third, I mention the relationship between BAN and WPAN Fourth, I give an overview of MAC for WPAN. And then, I introduce the Intra / Inter body communications. Finally, I focus on the consideration of MAC protocol for the BAN. 3

Outline of MAC requirements for the BAN
Energy-efficient wireless body area network - Battery-powered devices Body sensor: recharge/exchange (alternative) Wearable devices: recharge/exchange (possible) Reliable wireless body area network Medical application-related data is very important Therefore, It must reach the end point without loss. Harmonization and convergence with the different MAC technologies for near-field communication - Adaptive and Scalable MAC protocol Network layer I’m going to start with an outline of MAC requirements for BAN. The essential requirement is Energy-Efficiency Because body sensor and wearable device are Battery-powered devices. Another requirement is the reliable wireless body area network For example, Medical application-related data is very important Therefore, It must reach the end point without loss. Last requirement is that MAC protocol for the BAN harmonizes and converges With the different MAC technologies for the near-field communication. And so we need the adaptive and scalable MAC protocol Optionally, it can be supported in Network layer.

MAC issues on 802.15 BAN Reliable transmission QoS guarantee
Low power consumption Secure transmission Reference) DOC: IEEE ban, Jan In the previous meeting, MAC issues on BAN are presented. Data transmission in the BAN, It should be guaranteed the reliability and Security and Battery-powered device should consume the low power. Everything are very important factors in BAN as well as WPAN. 5

Relationship between BAN and WPAN
IEEE : Bluetooth IEEE : High data rate WPAN IEEE : Low data rate WPAN IEEE IEEE IEEE IEEE 802.15 SG BAN In this slide, I explain the relationship between BAN and WPAN. First, IEEE 802,15,1 has derived a WPAN standard based on the Bluetooth. Second, IEEE 802,15,3 based on High data rate technology such as UWB. Third, IEEE 802,15,4 based on Low data rate technology such as ZigBee. IEEE SG BAN includes and has relationship with three standards because it can use for Medical applications as well as non-medical applications such as wearable devices. Therefore we can present the relationship to this figure. 6

MAC protocols for WPAN IEEE 802.15.1 Polling-based MAC IEEE 802.15.3
TDMA-based, contention-based, QoS-supported MAC IEEE Contention-based MAC WSN-specific MAC S-MAC, T-MAC, TRAMA.. In this slide, I introduce MAC protocols for WPAN. IEEE uses the Polling-based MAC. IEEE uses TDMA-based, contention-based, and QoS-supported MAC.. IEEE uses Contention-based MAC and WSN-specific MAC including S-MAC, T-MAC… All MAC protocols can be used for BAN. All MAC protocols can be used for the BAN 7

Inter/Intra body communications
BAN devices - personal server communication WPAN-based technology IEEE /4 (WPAN) IEEE (Bluetooth) Inter-body communication (BAN-BAN) Personal server - personal server communication WLAN-based technology IEEE (WLAN) Interoperation BAN with External network Personal server - AP/BS communication should use Internet to communicate with control center and end user WLAN, Cellular network In this slide, I want to introduce 2 definitions: Intra-body communication and Inter-body communication. Intra-body communication means the data delivery between BAN devices to Personal server using WPAN-based technology. Inter-body communication means the data delivery between BAN to BAN, that is to say, Personal server to Personal Server using WLAN-based technology. Another focus is Interoperation BAN with External network. This means the communication between Personal server and AP/BS. This should use Internet to communicate with control center and end user Using WLAN or Cellular network. 8

Consideration of MAC protocol for the BAN (1/2)
is scalable and flexible protocol BAN can consist of various wireless devices Heterogeneous devices: body sensors/wearable devices is application-dependant protocol Medical application and non-medical application supports inter-networking and inter-operation with Internet or external network. In this slide and next slide, I brief you on the consideration of MAC protocol for BAN. MAC protocol for the BAN is scalable and flexible protocol Because BAN can consist of various wireless devices such as body sensor and wearable device. And It is application-dependant protocol: Medical application and Non-medical application. I supports inter-networking and inter-operation with Internet or External network. 9

Consideration of MAC protocol for the BAN (2/2)
Questions for deployment How to control and manage the different Application? How to support the Routing or upper layer? How to co-operate with PHY or lower layer? How to support Multi-hop routing? How to minimize overhead and frame size? Scalable approach Cross-layer approach My final topic is on questions for deployment. How to solve and overcome? Optimized approach 10

Summary Outline of MAC requirements for the BAN
Intra / Inter body communications Consideration of MAC requirements for the BAN In closing, I would like to summarize the follows. First, I introduced an outline of MAC requirements for the BAN Second, I explained Intra/Inter body communications. Finally, I address the consideration of MAC requirements for the BAN. 11
