RSP Repository Services Day
Put it in the Depot Theo Andrew Project Manger, EDINA RSP Repository Services Day 23rd April 2008 How many have a functioning repository in your institution? How many do not have a repository or are in the process of setting one up? How many do not know? The Depot will be relevant to all of you. Introduction The purpose of the Depot is to help ensure that all UK academics can enjoy the benefits of Open Access for their research outputs – in line with JISC strategy for UK education and research and funded as a national online facility as part of its Repositories Programme.
3
Purpose & background National e-print repository service for the interim period Enables all UK academics to share in benefits of OA Enables all UK academics to meet the requirements of funder’s mandates Many universities and other academic institutions have already invested in a repository for their staff, but as yet this is not comprehensive and so for many UK researchers there is no current provision for open access dissemination of their research. The role of the Depot is to bridge that gap, complementing existing institutional repositories (IRs) by providing a repository for the interim period before every university has such repository provision – and simplifying the message for Open Access (“put it in the Depot”). In doing so, the Depot helps create a level playing field for open access deposit by all in UK higher education, especially when there are mandates by grant-funding bodies such as UK research councils.
