1 Musculoskeletal System

2 Part 1: Skeletal System What is its purpose? Provide frame and support for all the other body systems Aids in movement Provides protection Site of mineral storage Site of blood cell formation Makes up bones, cartilage and connective tissue

3 Structures found in the skeletal system
Bone Cartilage Joints Ligaments and Tendons

4 Bones are comprised of:
26% minerals (mostly a compound containing calcium 50% water 4% Fat 20% protein Put that statement in your own words Bone strength and grown are determined by an animals ration.

5 There are 4 types of bones:
Long bones Short bones Flat bones Irregular bones

6 Long Bones Serve as support columns
Provide support for the body giving it the rigidity (hardness) necessary to stand and move Example: Leg Bones

7 Short Bones Shaped like a cube Often as big around as they are long
Located in complex joints, such as the knee and hock Serve as hinges Protect long bones by being flexible Cushion shock Diminish friction Example: Hock, Knee

8 Flat Bones Relatively thin and flat and usually curved
Protect vital organs such as the brain, the heart, and the lungs Are longer and wider than they are thick Usually multiple bones fused together Example: Scapula, Skull, Ribs

9 Irregular Bones Irregularly shaped
Important to the protection and support of the central nervous system Points of some muscle attachment Example: Vertebrae These bones make up the backbone, which is not a single bone, but a series of irregular bones. They flex and bend to give the animal movement.
