Trout raised in cold water weigh more than trout raised in warm water.
5-in-5 Bellwork #8 Trout raised in cold water weigh more than trout raised in warm water. Part 1: Identify the independent, dependent and controlled variables in this experiment. Part 2: Write a hypothesis for this experiment.
3
Go over Quick Check
4
I will… identify the control and experimental group in a controlled experiment Understand the purpose of a control group
5
Control and Experimental Groups
6
Conducting a CONTROLLED Experiment
An Experimental Group will be the group: with the independent variable this is the group that is being tested! A Control Group will be the group: without the independent variable OR the “normal” conditions
7
Example: Plants that are grown with fertilizer will grow taller.
Experimental Group Control Group Go over example with a plant and fertilizer.
8
Purpose of a Control Group
The control group is used as a COMPARISON to the experimental group It helps scientists see the impact the independent variable had on the dependent variable.
9
Set up your whiteboard! Independent Variable: Dependent Variable:
Control Group: Experimental Group: Set up your whiteboard!

Walking 10,000 steps a day will lower blood pressure.
IV: number of steps taken each day DV: blood pressure Control Group: group walking less than 10,000 steps per day Experimental Group: group walking more than 10,000 steps per day

Hamsters raised on a taco diet have less heart disease than hamsters raised on Purina Hamster Chow.
IV: type of diet DV: heart disease Control Group: group of hamsters fed hamster chow Experimental Group: group of hamsters fed tacos
12
Exercise cuts the risk of catching colds.
IV: amount of exercising DV: catching a cold Control Group: group of people that do not exercise Experimental Group: group of people that do exercise
