Recognition by OFSTED and LA as highly effective Employed by Essex LA Deployed on a temporary basis to cover vacancy or absence in school in difficulties If available deployed in coaching capacity 2 x primary currently Secondary recently appointed (Executive HT)

Executive Headteacher
Experienced and effective headteacher Substantive headteacher in one school, seconded part time (or full time) to school with no headteacher and insufficient capacity to appoint acting headteacher Head of a hard or soft federation Can be applied to headteacher of Academies

Interim (acting) headteacher
Freelance Headteacher – employed directly by school, through agency or via LA to fill headteacher vacancy on a temporary basis. Can be full time or part time

Headteacher providing support for colleague in first year of headship Usually brokered by LA (SIA)

NCSL scheme – Essex part of pilot Training/accreditation – 2 days Coaching and mentoring skills 4 x primary currently in Essex Plans under way for introduction across Essex from September

Experienced serving headteacher – good/outstanding leadership Experience of working with other schools to “support sustainable change” Recruited and trained through NCSL Learner centred consultancy and coaching model In Essex funded for 15 days support per year To work with new head in challenging circumstances or twice “satisfactory” leadership team Approximately 20 primary, secondary and special LLEs in Essex

National Leaders of Education (NLEs)
Outstanding headteachers Application through NCSL Previous work in schools in difficulty “Rigorous selection process” Funded by LA Provide additional leadership to schools in difficulty – emerging from an OFSTED category or in danger of going into one 300 primary by 2012 – currently 2 primary in Essex

Host school for NPQH Good/outstanding leadership and capacity
Identified by NCSL Good/outstanding leadership and capacity Able to provide learning environment for NPQH candidate 5-20 days internship

Associate Headteacher
Successful leadership team Able to provide leadership placement for deputy head/aspiring headteacher 10 days placement – shared costs? Significant research project – what are we doing now? What could we do better? Similar to existing secondary internship model

Sustainable Leadership Group
Essex headteachers Primary, Secondary and Special Remit – research causes and possible solutions of present and projected headteacher shortage at a local level Develop range of strategies for immediate action
