1 Types of Chemical Reactions Ch. 6.2
List the 5 signs that a chemical reaction has occurred: 1. Color Change 2. Temperature Change 3. Production of gas 4. Precipitate forms 5. Change in properties (texture, shape)

2 Types of Chemical Reactions Ch. 6.2
When a chemical reaction occurs, bonds are broken, or made, atoms are re-arranged, creating new combinations of compounds and molecules with new properties.

3 Let’s use circles to represent elements and compounds.
1. or A + B AB *This is like burning a magnesium strip in air (O2) (think back to the metals lab). 2Mg Mg0 *This type of reaction is called a synthesis reaction (bring together)

4 *This is what happens when water is split using
Let’s use circle to represent elements and compounds. 2. or AB A +B *This is what happens when water is split using electricity. 2H H * This type of reaction is called a decomposition reaction. (Break apart)

5 *When hydrochloric acid and zinc metal are mixed, this happens:
Let’s use circle to represent elements and compounds. 3. or A + BC AC + B *When hydrochloric acid and zinc metal are mixed, this happens: 2Zn + 2HCl ZnCl2 + H2 *This is a single replacement reaction.

6 Lead nitrate (PbNO3) with Potassium Iodide (KI) PbNO3 + KI PbI + KNO3
Let’s use circle to represent elements and compounds. 4. or AB + CD AD + CB *This is like mixing: Lead nitrate (PbNO3) with Potassium Iodide (KI) PbNO3 + KI PbI + KNO3 *This is called a double replacement reaction.
