1 Collision Course

2 Where and when? NASA has determined that a satellite (containing a large amount of an explosive fuel) is spiraling out of its orbit, and can not be controlled. Their recommendation to the government is to have it destroyed. The government has decided to use the military’s missile defense system to shoot the satellite. How can this be done?

3 When and where? A cart starts from rest at x = 0.5m, and accelerates in the positive direction. At the same instant, a toy jeep is released from x = 2.0m and moves at a constant speed in the negative direction. When and where do they meet? How is this done?

4 When and where (and how far, fast and quick)?
Predictions can best be made from EQUATIONS Scientific equations come from best fit lines and curves on graphs From actual kinematics graphs, get the generalized equations for the position vs time and velocity vs time graphs. Determine the meaning of the letters and values in the equations.

5 Kinematics Equations Dx = vit + ½ at2 vf = vi + at Dx = ½( vi + vf)(t)
vf2 = vi2 + 2a(Dx)

6 Sample Word Problem A train starts from rest and accelerates uniformly at 0.5 m/s/s. After 20 seconds have passed (at t = 20.0 seconds): how fast is the train moving? how far has the train moved? Determine the answers to those questions for t= 40.0 seconds.

7 Sample Word Problem When a 767 touches down, it is moving at 150miles/hour. If its brakes can slow it by 3.00m/s/s, how much runway does it need to stop?
