4 The Importance of Junior Year

5 Junior Year: Strong Academics
When students apply for summer programs/internships or college in the fall of senior year, the last grades that will be present on the transcript are from their junior year. Many will focus on grade trends – hopefully upward trends! How a student does in 11th grade is more important than how a student did in 9th grade.

6 Junior Year: It’s Never Too Late to Become Involved!
We encourage students to be meaningfully involved - PHHS clubs and sports Community organizations Leadership positions Community service Faith-based groups Consider part-time employment for students who have the time. Find balance and joy in what you do!

7 Junior Year: Tasks to Complete
Generate a list of your interests, abilities, social/cultural preferences, and personal qualities. Research careers that you feel would match your list. Move away from fields and towards specific careers. Be intentional! Create a Résumé. Begin preparations to write a personal statement. Create a list of potential references that you would want to write a letter of recommendation for employment, college, etc. (See 9 Rules for Requesting Letters Handout) Remember that the summer between your junior and senior year can be quite busy…don’t wait until the last minute.

11 Senior Year FAQ’s

12 How Do I Select the Right Courses for Senior Year?
Students are independently advised based on desired outcomes…no two are the same Move away from “senior year should be fun” and towards “senior year is my last chance to prepare for what I am about to see” Major Maps are instrumental in assisting students in course selection

13 Early Release During Senior Year
All PHHS students must be enrolled in a minimum of 4 courses. This is the last opportunity a student will have to prepare for post-high school plans. Students are only granted early release if they are employed or enrolled in college courses. Enrolling in college courses is a process. Please allow time to complete exams and workshops prior to enrollment in courses. Students must complete and submit the Early Release form prior to the first day of school.

14 Completing Community Service for Senior Year
We strongly encourage students to complete their senior year community service prior to returning to school in August. Beginning June 1st, community service hours can be completed and submitted for senior year. All senior year community service hours must be submitted by April 1st, 2020.

15 Credit Recovery The deadline for all online coursework is April 1st, 2020. Please be advised that we encourage students to complete courses as at a reasonable pace so that their participation in commencement is not in jeopardy. Any deficiency in meeting graduation requirements will prohibit a student from participating in the commencement ceremony.

16 Closing Thoughts Keep the process in perspective
Work together as a family Students must take ownership Discuss finances openly Start early and meet all deadlines Communicate with your son/daughter, admission counselors, financial aid officers, teachers, and counselors.
