Discovered in 1808 by Sir Humphry Davy
The name is derived from the Latin word meaning lime.
A silvery white, soft metal that reacts with water.
One of the most abundant elements on Earth. There are vast deposits of its carbonate.
When heated in kilns the carbonate of this element gives off carbon dioxide gas to leave quicklime. This reacts violently with water to give slaked lime.

The name is derived from the Greek word meaning “acid forming”, although this name is misleading nowadays.
A colourless, odourless gas.
This element is essential for all forms of life since it is a constituent of DNA, and it comprises over half the mass of the average person.

Discovered by Hennig Brandt in 1669
The name is derived from the Greek word meaning “bringer of light”, because it glows in the dark.
There are several different forms including White and Red.
White is spontaneously flammable when exposed to air above 30°C and is a deadly poison.
Red is made by gently heating white. Red is used mixed with powdered glass stuck on the side of boxes of safety matches for matches to be struck against to light them.
