5 civil war James Longstreet first offered his services after resigning his commission as a Major in the United States army, were he had served during the Mexican-American War.

6 The Road to Gettysburg Gettysburg, Longstreet offered a plan to Lee and the Richmond government. Longstreet's plan was not adopted that June.

Remarkable achievements- Most modern General of the South, called “The Old War Horse” by Lee. Battles he won: Second Bull Run -Aug , 1862, Fredericksburg Dec.13, 1862, and Chickamauga- Sept , 1863.

10 Knoxville and beyond Longstreet under-supplied and plagued by dissension, was defeated in his attempt to take Knoxville As the war goes on the South has less of men, and materials and the Army suffers. They start to lose.

11 After the war He openly criticized Lee for his actions.
He became a Republican, the political party largely responsible for the hated Reconstruction policies in the South. He wrote a letter that was condemned in several newspapers across the South for his advice to southerners.

12 His return to Georgia Accepting the job of Federal Marshal, Longstreet returned to Georgia in June of 1881 from Europe where he was the U.S. Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire.
