Stats - Between 4.8 and 12.7 million tonnes of plastic enter the ocean each year
Many of these plastics degrade into micro plastics becoming nearly uncollectible, polluting our oceans, killing over 1 million marine animals a year, and entering human food sources where abundance of seafood becomes scarce and sick seafood become a risk for consumers. A quarter of all fish sampled in California markets had trace amounts of plastics.
The problem is real.

3. Eliminate Single Use Plastics
Beach Cleanups (Evidence | Target Plastic)
Hold an average of four beach cleanups a month Data shows 118,018 items of trash, weighing 9,352 pounds total, from along our coastline. Of the trash collected 82.7% are plastics.
Ocean Friendly (Education & Outreach)
Restaurants participating must follow the first five criteria:
No expanded polystyrene use (aka Styrofoam).
Proper recycling practices are followed.
Only reusable tableware is used for onsite dining, and disposable utensils for takeout food are provided only upon request.
No plastic bags offered for takeout or to-go orders.
Straws are provided only upon request

Main strategy for the Rap program is to advocate for single-use plastics bans-
We use our beach cleanups, avg four a month to provide the data set that tells our advocates what single-use plastics are harming our communities coastline the most -

OFR - This data set helped myself and a handful of Surfrider advocates to develop the Ocean Friendly Restaurant program- This program has over 140 restaurants in San Diego that have voluntarily eliminated many, if not all single-use plastics from their eateries - #1 on the list - EPS. Created because of the data we found.
OFR- One of the main opposition points to bans is the increased pricing of alternative products. Surfrider advocates utilize the OFR program to show restaurants thriving without single-use plastics, to use those businesses as advocates themselves to ban certain plastics, and to expand our OFR’s as the program continues to reduce single-use plastics that have not been banned.
RAP- Ordinances- Our advocates work years to advocate for ordinances - The process is built for success: Identifying what, working with a champion at the council level, developing a coalition of enviro groups, businesses, planning boards, and leaders to support the ordinance. Outreach through the media, public forums, and op-eds to educate all and offering to speak with the opposition. - Results are - Policies passed

EPS Foodware
Santa Clarita -EPS Food Service Ware – Similar to single‐use plastic bags, there was a 74% decrease in the volume of EPS food service ware observed in the 53 sites in common between this Project and the BASMAA Study. Like single‐use plastic bags, this large decrease coincides with ordinances that have been adopted throughout most of the Santa Clara Valley.
San Francisco - San Francisco also completed a Litter Audit to asses the effectiveness of various policies.  There was a 36% decrease in EPS litter after the ban was enacted.
Ordinances work -
By % of the California, including Solana Beach, Encinitas, Del Mar, City of Oceanside and the City of San Diego, enacted plastic bag bans - 66% reduction in litter of this plastic - Results showed in a decline from our beach cleanups where over 1900 fewer bags were found on our coastline
EPS- As mentioned the second most commonly found plastic waste -
Santa Clarita showed a 74% decrease in volume of EPS food service ware after their eps ordinance
San Francisco- 36% decrease in eps litter after their ban
With the passage of I.B., San Diego, Del Mar, Encinitas, Solana Beach and hopefully more communities to come we will also see a decline of this single-use waste in our environment

 No restaurant (including fast food restaurants), beverage provider, or vendor may use, provide, or sell:
plastic beverage straws, 
plastic stirrers, or 
plastic utensils.
Plastic Bottled Beverages, Packaged Water at City Events and Property
The use, sale and distribution of Bottled Beverages (less than one liter) at City-owned facilities, including events held through rentals or leases, is prohibited.
The distribution of “packaged water” on City property is prohibited.
These items make up 24.33% of plastics reportedly collected by Surfrider in 2017

What are we working to eliminate next - There has been progressive single-use plastic ordinances passing in communities such as Santa Monica, Hermosa Beach, Bay Area cities, and even in some of our coastal cities in the county.
Expand on polystyrene foam - The city of San Diego past their plastic reduction ordinance last month and lead on the banning the following.
Stirrers, stencils, plastic beverage straws - Other communities in CA have passed similar measures to eliminate these non-recyclable, single-use plastics.
Plastic bottle beverages- It starts with the cities- Providing greater access to fill your reusable water bottle and reduct the use of plastic bottles will curb the use of this single-use plastic.
If just these items are banned, based on the beach cleanup date I provided, we will reduce the single-use plastics collected off of our beaches by nearly 25%
