Nuestra Meta This unit, we’re going to learn how to discuss sports in Spanish. Today, we’re going to talk about Hispanic sports in English so that you have an understanding of what sports culture looks like in Spanish-speaking countries.
4
KWL On the same sheet of lined paper, write “sports culture day” and make sure you put your name. Then, draw a KWL chart → know, want to know, learned. You have five minutes to record at least EIGHT things in the KW columns. Include what you already know about hispanic sports (including about athletes), and what you want to know. It’s okay if all 8 things are in the W column!
5
Un artículo Read the article about soccer in Latin America. Then, answer the following questions in at least five complete sentences each (in English): Soccer is a vital cultural aspect in many Latin American countries, bringing together people of different races, religions, economic classes, and political parties. Is there an equivalent (not necessarily a sport) in American culture? If so, what is it? If not, what could we create that would serve the same purpose? In 1938, Brazilian soccer was largely influenced by African immigrants. After reading the article, do you think affected the immigrant population positively or negatively? Why?

Los jugadores In groups of 3-4, you’ll work together to research a Hispanic athlete. Then, together, you’ll create a baseball card (even if they didn’t play baseball) to share facts about this person with the rest of the class. I’ll show you an example on the next slide and give you copy paper/colored pencils. Un ejemplo Your baseball card doesn’t have to follow the same format. It does need to include at least TEN things about the person you were assigned- make them look nice and professional. We are going to share these out afterwards--so make sure everyone contributed something to the card AND the mini-presentation!
