1 Monitoring excercise 2 Marianna Luoma

2 General instructions Aim: To learn to design, perform, and report a more advanced monitoring activity To study the theory incorporated to the measurements Physical quantities to be measured: Depending on the instruments Sampling duration: Depending on the task Sampling location Groupwork: 2-3 students in each group Photos of the monitoring are desirable All of these projects require time and effort in order to learn about the theory, to use the instruments, and to do the data handling after the monitoring. You study the instructions and plan the study yourself. You get the instruments from the laboratory.

3 Schedule Thursday 7th of February:
Information about the 6 possible tasks Choosing the topic Wednesday the 13th of February Presenting the chosen topics Friday the 15th of February at 9-11 am. You can go to the laboratory and get help in using the instruments Working in groups Thursday 7th of March: Oral presentations of the projects

4 Oral presentations You need to do a PowerPoint file which has to be returned in Moodle by the 5th of March The template for the PowerPoint file is in Moodle The file should contain the following slides: Title page, Introduction, Aims, Method, Results, Analysis of results, List of references The theory should be explained in Introduction Oral presentations are held on Tuesday the 6th of March

5 Topic 1 (text book pages 333-339)
Heat recovery efficiency of two air handling units in Building A Explain the principles of rotary heat exchanger and plate heat exchanger. Use several Ebro data loggers and monitor for several days. Calculate the heat recovery efficiencies. Compare the heat recovery efficiencies of the two systems with each other and with literature.

6 Topic 2 (text book pages 315, 333-339, 390-393, 613-615)
HVAC processes in the air handling unit in the laboratory The processes are heat recovery, heating, humidifying, and cooling. Study air temperatures, humidities and heating and cooling powers in the processes. Let the air handlig unit run and record the values of the different sensors in the system. Do the calculations of heating and cooling power. Calculate heat recovery efficiency. Combine the theory from the text book to your presentation.

7 Topic 3 (text book page 105; ISO 7730 Standard, pages 6 and 13)
Draught rate measurements in front of a displacement ventilation inlet Study the principles of displacement ventilation (text book pages ) and include some theory in your presentation Use Swema in the test room in the laboratory Study the operation of the instrument Measure velocities and temperatures in front of the displacement inlet at different distances and heights. Draw figures of the measured velocities.

8 Topic 4 (text book pages 124-131)
CO2 concentrations in indoor air Study the theory of CO2 concentrations in indoor air. Combine some theory in your oral presentation. Monitor with wireless data logging system Delta OHM HD35 (HD35EDL sensor for pressure difference, HD35EDG sensor for CO2, two HD35EDL sensors for temperature and humidity). Study the operation of the instrument. Select a suitable location for mesurements. Use all 4 sensors. Monitor for a couple of days. Draw figures of the measured data (concentrations, temperatures and humidities).

9 Topic 5 (text book pages depending on the objectives)
Multi-channel temperature monitoring at an air handling unit in Building A Squirrel data logger Grant 2010 Series Several sensor possibilities: thermocouple sensors for temperature, a sensor for pressure difference or a sensor for air velocity. Design a study with a purpose. Include also theoretical part in your study.

10 Topic 6 (read the manual)
A study of cold bridges in a building (Fluke TI45 Thermal imager) Study the use of a thermal imager ( The data handling is somewhat demanding; thus you need time for that. Use a tempareture scale in the thermal images to explain different colours. Do the measurements in some parts of a building. Take photos of the same locations. In your presentations, show the photos and the thermal images side by side.

11 Start planning your measurements:
With whom do you work? 2-3 students in a group. Which one of the suggested topics do you choose? Read the theory in the literature given. Study how to use the instruments. Use internet to get the manufacturer’s instructions. Plan your measurements: When and where do you measure? What kind of results do you expect to get? How would you analyze the results? Go to the laboratory on Fridays for consultation.
