What is the Law of Conservation of Mass?
Focus 5 Nov 27, 28 What is the Law of Conservation of Mass? What steps are followed when balancing a chemical equation?
2
Matter CANNOT be created or destroyed. It can only change form.
H2O is NOT the same as H2o2.
3
1. Remember the Law of Conservation of Mass
You must have the same number of atoms of each element on both sides of the equation
4
2. You may NEVER change a subscript. Why?
Because you completely change the identity of the molecule!
5
3. Tally the beginning number of atoms of each element on both sides of the equation.
6
Using a pencil, begin to insert coefficients in front of molecules
Using a pencil, begin to insert coefficients in front of molecules. When you do, change the number of atoms in your tally. Be prepared to erase!
7
Sometimes you may have to begin with guessing.
