Notes – Specialized Cells
2
specialized cells Muscle Cells
A cell that has a specific function, different from other cells. FUNCTION: to contract so that they can move body parts STRUCTURE: Contains more mitochondria for greater energy production AND are able to change their length
3
3. Nerve Cells FUNCTION: carry nerve impulses (information) to different parts of the body STRUCTURE: Long cells allow them to stretch out long distances AND have large ends to connect to the next cell for easier communication
4
4. Connective cells FUNCTION: Holds the different body parts together
STRUCTURE: jelly-like with spindly fibers that help it to stick to other cells
5
5. Epithelial Cells FUNCTION: Lines the surfaces of blood vessels, organs, and skin for protection and separation of those items from the environment STRUCTURE: Multiple cells are tightly packed so items cannot pass through these AND have a top/bottom that is strong and difficult to penetrate.
6
6. Palisade Cells FUNCTION: These cells make food for plants
STRUCTURE: These cells are large and contain chloroplasts
7
7. Root Hair Cells FUNCTION: These cells take water into the plant cells upward from the ground. (makes vascular tissue) STRUCTURE: Long and thin cells to increase the rate of water transport AND contain lots of mitochondria to provide the energy to move water
8
8. Epidermal Cell FUNCTION: Cells that cover the outside of the plant and reduces water loss STRUCTURE: multiple cells are closely packed so items cannot enter easily AND secretes a waxy covering that helps protect the inside and keeps water from escaping.
