JOHN CALVIN Wrote “Institutes of the Christian Religion”
Believed in Predestination- God chooses and already knows who will be saved. Believed people are sinful by nature. Geneva, Switzerland- Calvin ruled here using a Theocracy. Ex: a strict moral code imposed and every sin was made a crime. No work or pleasure on a Sunday; no extravagance in dress. If you were excommunicated you were banished from the city. Blasphemy could be punished by death; lewd singing could be punished by your tongue being pierced.

John Knox Founded the Presbyterian Church in Scotland.
Presbyter- Means elder. These were elder run churches.

Anabaptists Means “baptize again”.
Believed only adults could be baptized. Refuse to fight wars. Examples- Amish. The early Anabaptists believed they should live in complete separation from the world around them.

Ignatious of Loyola- Founded The Jesuit Order. Jesuits were members of the Society of Jesus. They founded schools. They sent out missionaries. They tried to stop the spread of Protestantism.

People need faith and good works for salvation Indulgences are valid expressions of faith.
