GENDER IN TODAY’S SOCIETY
2
Think of as many gender stereotypes as you can – get into your row and jot them down on your poster paper Ask yourself: “How are all girls/boys supposed to behave? What are they supposed to like or dislike? How are they supposed to look, think and feel? What are they supposed to be good at?”
3
Now, outside the circle, list what might make a boy or girls “outside the box”?
an example could be a boy who likes flowers, or a girl who likes motorcycles
4
Turn to a partner and share one time you felt like you were “inside the box” and one time you felt like you were “outside the box” for your gender.
5
Where do these stereotypes come from?
Are they valid/legit? What is helpful/harmful about these stereotypes? Are they limiting or empowering? What traits of the opposite sex do you respect/admire? What gender roles are you ok embracing which ones would you like to see go away?
6
Essential Questions to Ponder
What does it mean to be a man/woman (your gender)? What is chivalry to you and how much chivalry do you expect from a boy/girlfriend? What are your ideal qualities in a partner? What ideal qualities do you have to offer someone? How are women disadvantaged? Advantaged? How are men disadvantaged? Advantaged?
