What is fear? - Common def. An unpleasant emotion caused by the threat of danger, pain, or harm (Oxford dictionary) - A response to a perceived threat that is consciously recognized as a danger (North American Nursing Diagnosis Association) Causative factors: separation from one's support system in a potentially threatening situation such as hospitalization, diagnostic test, or treatment; knowledge deficit or unfamiliarity; language barrier; sensory impairment; and phobic stimulus or phobia. Fear vs. anxiety: having an identifiable stimulus vs. non easily identifiable stimulus.

What is fear? Key things to know!
It is healthy! part of normal brain function; a lack of fear may be a sign of serious brain damage. It comes in many shades! from mild to paralyzing…doctor check up/terrorist attack 3) Not as automatic as commonly deemed! partly instinct (pain), partly learned (afraid of certain people, places, or situations because of negative associations and past experiences, partly taught (based on cultural norms/perceptions) Partly imagined (based on what we imagine could happen) 4) It dictates your actions: a. freeze, b. fight, c. flight, or d. fright you read a memo your company will be laying off people tell your boss why you shouldn’t be laid off start looking for another job you take no action (in long run you become depressed)

The good (survival related) & the bad (mental blocks) fears
Fear itself actually a good thing? Fear doesn’t negate courage. It beckons it! (makes you step out of your comfort zone and learn new things, gives creativity) Fear is intended to keep us safe! Fear is instructive (sign you are changing/growing)! But…OUR REACTION TO IT IS AN ISSUE causing: cardiovascular damage, bowel syndrome, brain damage; fatigue, mental heath issues (depression, PTSD), etc.
