What causes Japan to open up & become more like the west?

2 I. US Steams Into Japan A. Japan was ruled by Shogun
1. Peasants work for nobles and their armies, the Samurai B. 1853: US Commodore Matthew Perry goes to Tokyo harbor C. Japan & US sign trade agreement called the Treaty of Kanagawa 1. allows trade between the US & Japan D. Most Japanese = anti-foreigner  ask Emperor to take control E. In 1867, Emperor Mutsuhito begins the Meiji era 1. Emperor realizes the best way to stop western influence was for Japan to modernize  studies western methods

3 II. Japanese Imperialism
A. As Japan industrialized, they built a powerful military B. 1876: Jpn. forces neighboring Korea to open ports for trade 1. China upset bc they were Korea’s trading partner 2. Both Jpn. & China sign a “hands-off” Korea treaty C. China sends in its troops to help squash rebellion against Korean leader 1. Japan attacks China for violating treaty (Sino-Japanese War) D. Japan wins  gets Taiwan & sphere of infl. in Manchuria & Korea E. 1903: Russia tries to gain influence in Korea & Manchuria 1. Jpn. launches a surprise attack against Russia ships near Manchuria (Russo-Japanese War) F. Jpn. wins the war crushing the Russian navy G. Jpn. annexes Korea - closes Korean newspapers, and replaces Korean subjects w/ Japanese subjects
