The USA a federal republic
consists of 50 states and the District of Columbia (where the capital Washington D.C. is) 48 states – on the “mainland” Alaska – in the north of the American continent Hawaiian Islands – km south-west of California

- the Rocky Mountains the Appalachian Mountains (east) – not so high the highest mountains: - Denali (6,194m) - in Alaska - Mt. Whitney (4,418m) – in the Sierra Nevada (California), the highest peak of the continent
