consists of 50 states and the District of Columbia (where the capital Washington D.C. is) 48 states – on the “mainland” Alaska – in the north of the American continent Hawaiian Islands – km south-west of California

most populated state: California, least populated state: Alaska the USA extend over 1/3 of the North American continent 3rd largest country in the world (after Russia, Canada) border on Mexico (south), Canada (north), the Atlantic Ocean (east), and the Pacific Ocean (west) four different time zones population: 326 mil. (3rd in the world, from 2017)

- 13 stripes = 13 original British colonies which formed the US - 50 stars = 50 states

- the Rocky Mountains the Appalachian Mountains (east) – not so high the highest mountains: - Denali (6,194m) - in Alaska - Mt. Whitney (4,418m) – in the Sierra Nevada (California), the highest peak of the continent
