1 Standard: understand subtraction of rational numbers as adding the additive inverse, p-q = P + (-q). Show that the distance between the two rational numbers on the number line is the absolute value of their difference, and apply to real world context. John walked a distance west on the beach of 15 2/3 of miles. Then he turned around and walked east for 25 and a 7/3 miles. How far past his original walking point did he go when he walked east? Things to consider Can you represent this with a mathematical model? Can you represent this with addition using a negative number? Can you have a negative distance? How does this relate to this problem?

2 Absolute Value Based on the previous slide what was the absolute value or total distance that John walked that day? How many different ways can you express the absolute value. For example what kind of mathematical models can you build?

3 If a person drives 500 2/8 miles in 1 3/4 hours, compute the unit rate as the complex fraction.
Questions to consider How is this fraction related to a ratio? Is there any difference? What elements are we using to explain our rate? Solve this using a mathematical model in groups. Be prepared to discuss your model with your class.

4 Standard versus Non Standard Measurement
Remembering the day we went outside and counted our steps in terms of Mississippi’s what did we learn? Why are standard measurements important? What problems can arise using non standard measurements?

5 Converting from standard to metric
A Train is moving at 60 MPH. Please convert to the metric system and express the rate in Kilometers per hour. Hint there are 2.54 centimeters in an inch.

6 Rational Numbers Define What are real numbers? What are whole numbers?
What is a natural number? What is an Integer? What is a rational number What is an irrational number?

7 How would the ratio table look for protein and calories?
