1 Fall 2000 Internet2 Member Meeting
Plenary Session, Tuesday AM This is a general overview presentation about Internet2. Internet2 is a consortium, led by US universities, which is recreating the partnership among academia, industry and government that fostered today’s Internet in its infancy. 31 October 2000

2 Abilene and the Internet2 Network of the Future
Internet2 Fall Member Meeting Atlanta, Georgia October 31, 2000 Abilene and the Internet2 Network of the Future Steve Corbató Director, Backbone Network Infrastructure

3 Abilene – October, 2000 Inflection point in network development
OC-48c (2.5 Gbps) IP-over-SONET backbone 53 current and pending connections in 32 states Second OC-48c connection: SoX 175 participants in 47 states and D.C. Ongoing strong partnership Cisco, Nortel, Qwest, Indiana Univ., ITECs (NC and OH) Increasing backbone utilization Characteristic exponential growth Traffic doubling time: 7 months Advanced service testing and delployment Multicast QoS Network management 4/11/2019

4 Building the Network of the Future – I
Upgrade Abilene to a leading-edge optical transport capability Transition to OC-192c (10 Gbps) over DWDM backbone Explore optical interconnection options with international networks (e.g., CA*Net4) & leading GigaPoPs Establish a rapidly configurable, breakable Internet2 national testbed for the computer science research and the advanced network engineering communities Interconnection and limited peering with the DARPA Supernet Overlay networks (server-based) Option of limited-term dedicated capacity via MPLS tunnels or DWDM λ’s Continue the vital role of Abilene as a reliable platform for the development of innovative applications and the deployment of advanced services IP remains the common bearer service 4/11/2019

5 Building the Network of the Future – II
Position Abilene as a critical component of the Internet2 End-to-End (e2e) Initiative – in particular, its vital role within the U.S. research infrastructure Emphasis on pro-active measurement and open network management Increasing dependence on Abilene for next generation science Collaborate with the GigaPoPs on higher bandwidth attachments and the facilitation of international peering Creative, localized solutions often required above OC-3c Increasingly distributed set of international landing points and termination options 4/11/2019

The Internet2 Middleware Initiative or Who are all these people on the phone? or Ken has an office at 35,000 feet! Michael R. Gettes Georgetown University

8 “Middleware is the intersection of what the Network Engineers and the Application Programmers don’t want to do.” - Ken Klingenstein Chief Technologist, Univ. of Colorado, Boulder Director, Internet2 Middleware Initiative Lead Clergy, MACE PS of LC 4/11/2019

9 A Community Effort Internet2 membership provides “talented” people
Early Harvest (9/99), first real motivation MACE – Middleware Architecture Committee for Education (IT Arch folk who see each other often) Internet2 – critical support role (Ken, Renee, Ben) EDUCAUSE, EDU, CREN, CNI HEPKI – Higher Education PKI working groups U.S. Federal Government & USA Other Groups International Orgs (Terena, UK, JPN, …) 4/11/2019

MACE-DIR – Directory Interoperability eduPerson, LDAP-Recipe, Directory of Directories for Higher Education Conf Calls when needed, hopefully more regular MACE-Shibboleth – Inter-institutional Auth Now in full swing, expect bi-weekly conf calls soon. MACE-PKI – now HEPKI TAG/PAG 1 tag and 1 pag conf call, each bi-weekly. MACE-MED – Medical Middleware Early Adopters – WG meetings & bi-weekly calls MACE proper – bi-weekly conf calls 4/11/2019

13 Modus Operandi Middleware topics tend to be:
Dry, like watching windows boot Technically and Politically Challenging Difficult policy and legal issues looming (lawyers, ugh) Therefore – HUMOR IS REQUIRED!! Makes the conf calls and meetings almost fun! Balanced with keen respect for each other, many views When RL “Bob” Morgan speaks… We blame Bob for the magic words and acronyms Shibboleth, MACE, etc… 4/11/2019

“Hey, they’re using a different voice today!” H.323 has some way to go IP Telephony might be viable alternative We hope to learn this soon (hint, hint) Very Intense Discussions Great people who want to work this space The “Lurkers” – silent masses? 4/11/2019

15 Getting the word out http://middleware.internet2.edu
