3 Classification of Abused Drugs
Narcotics/Analgesics Analgesics are pain-reducing substances. Narcotics are analgesics derived from opium. Examples: Opium Heroin Morphine Codeine Darvon

4 Classification of Abused Drugs
Hallucinogens Induce changes in mood, attitude, thoughts, and perception; alter reality. Examples: LSD/Acid Mushrooms/Psilocybin Marijuana Mescaline PCP, DMT Ketamine

5 Classification of Abused Drugs
Depressants "Downers" Depress the functions of the central nervous system, cause the user to be less active. Examples: Alcohol Sedatives/Muscle Relaxers Barbiturates, Benzodiazepines, Tranquilizers Opioids Opium, Heroin, Morphine, Codeine Huffing of Household Chemicals

Stimulants "Uppers" Increase alertness, energy, or activity. Examples Caffeine Nicotine Cocaine Crack Amphetamines/Meth MDMA/Ecstasy

7 Classification of Abused Drugs
Performance Enhancing Drugs Increase muscle growth or improve athletic performance. Examples Anabolic Steroids Growth Hormones Depressants may be used to calm nerves Stimulants may be used to increase energy

Club Drugs A wide array of drugs used primarily at clubs, raves, and parties. Examples MDMA/Ecstasy Ketamine Rohypnol "Roofies" GHB

9 Vocabulary Rave: A dance party, usually lasting all night, that tends to be characterized by stroboscopic light effects, loud music, and high human density; attended ordinarily by youthful participants. Diluents: Inert substance added to a source material in order to thin it to the potency desired, or to add bulk.

What is a controlled substance? A drug or chemical whose manufacture, possession, or use are regulated by a government. Licit: Acceptable by law under some circumstances. Illicit: Unlawful or not permitted by law.
