Quality

Quality Management This is a system of getting things right the first time, no errors are allowed. All staff are involved in ensuring absolute quality of their work. Teams try to reduce as much waste as possible. Commitment to quality management requires a clear defined quality policy, focusing on customer satisfaction, staff training and employee empowerment.

Quality Control A manufacturer passes a sample of their raw materials and the final product through a quality control check. Any unacceptable products are then discarded as waste or sent back for re-working. This makes sure that products that are below standard are not sold to customers.

British Standards Institution
BSI is an organisation that produces national standards for certain products. When a business produces a product and it meets the agreed quality and safety standards specified by the BSI, the product will be marked with a BS ‘Kitemark’ symbol. This could give a company a competitive advantage. The consumer may get confidence in the product as it has reached agreed BSI standards.

Benchmarking Identifying a benchmark is used as a method of improving quality of production or service by copying the best techniques used by other organisations regarding as ‘the best’. Company's that use benchmarking first will hope to then be regarded as the benchmark standard in the future. Setting a benchmark for staff can be motivating an can lead to improvement.

Other Trade Organisations
Certain trade organisations introduce standards and logos that can be displayed on products that have met the agreed quality. There are quality assurance stickers that are displayed on meat products that have been produced to a certain industry standard.

Quality Circles Involve a small group of workers meeting at regular intervals to discuss where improvements can be made in the production process. Suggestions are then made to management for approval before being changed. Including them in quality circles, workers should then be more motivated, more productive and more willing to introduce new production methods.

Quality Assurance At certain points in the production process, products are checked to insure that they meet the agreed quality standard. All aspects of the production process are looked at to ensure there are no errors.
