1. Definition What is Transitional Shelter?
“Shelter which provides a habitable covered living space and a secure, healthy environment, with privacy and dignity, to those within it, during the period between a conflict or natural disaster and the achievement of a durable solution” (Corsellis and Vitale, 2005)

2. History Transitional Shelter history
Transitional shelter was introduced by Shelter Centre following the South Asia Tsunami in 2004 The approach has since accommodated millions of conflict and disaster affected people, from Kenya to Indonesia More recently Transitional Shelter has been a key part of the shelter strategy in Haiti The need to support transitional shelter was identified and prioritised by participants at Shelter Meeting

3. Projects Transitional Shelter projects
Transitional Shelter Guidelines are a set of practical field guidelines for using transitional shelter in programmes, funded by DFID and now IOM Transitional Shelter Standards are common standards and indicators agreed by the Project Consortium to improve the quality and consistency of transitional shelters in response programmes, funded by DFID and USAID Transitional Shelter Prototypes are examples of stockpilable transitional shelters developed by manufacturers that meet the Standards, funded by DFID and R&D from manufacturing partners
