(Take Notes…) Persuasion: a type of communication that offers an opinion and supports it with reasons and evidence. It sometimes asks readers or listeners to take a specific action. Examples: Newspapers, Magazines, TV, Radio, Speeches, or Books

Point of View: a person’s opinion on an issue. Logical Appeal: Supporting your point of view with stories, facts, or expert opinions. While reading “A Veto on Video Games”, answer questions #1-6 in your I.N. Then answer the “First Thoughts on Reading” questions #1-2 on page 205 When you finish, read through page 205

Look at your definition from your notes yesterday on what Logical Appeal means. Give an example of a time when you have used Logical Appeal to persuade someone. Describe whether you used a story, fact, or expert opinion. Have your textbook open to page 206

5 Language Arts: Tuesday 2-26 I.N. 16
Identifying Point of View Step 1: Look for positive and negative comments or phrases in the beginning. Step 2: What is the pattern? Are the words/comments mostly positive or negative? Step 3: Based on what you have found, what point of view do you think the author is speaking from? “The author’s point of view is… ______________” (Practice by going through the steps for the article we read yesterday on page 203.)

6 Language Arts: Tuesday 2-26 I.N. 16
Logical Appeal… (definition) Reason… (definition) EVIDENCE: (3 different kinds of support) Fact (example: statistics, proven data, proven true) Anecdote (Story that shows your point) Expert Opinion (someone who knows more about your topic and can support your point) Emotional Appeal… (definition)

7 Language Arts: Tuesday 2-26 I.N. 16
Follow the directions on page 208 for Mapping Logical Appeal in “A Veto on Video Games” Answer the question in the second red bullet after you have completed your map. When you finish, you have time to work on your vocabulary packet that is due on FRIDAY.

8 Language Arts: Wednesday 2-27 I.N. 17
Brainstorm a list of ideas you could write your persuasive essay on. Pick a subject, situation, or idea about which teens your age disagree. Come up with as many ideas as possible. Try to think of issues that have a real impact on people’s lives, such as school rules or social issues. (school, community, country, world?) What’s worth fighting for?

9 Language Arts: Wednesday 2-27 I.N. 17
Share your brainstorm ideas with the people at your table. On a separate piece of paper, combine your ideas into a large list. However, on your list, put the issues that you have the most emotion/ strong feelings towards at the top. Write your group member’s names next to the topic they want to write about.

10 Language Arts: Wednesday 2-27 I.N. 17
Green Textbook page : TAKE NOTES Issue – (Having an open campus) + Point of View – (We should not have it) = Opinion Statement – (Oakwood should have a more secure campus) Use the steps provided on page 212 to write your own opinion about a topic your group brainstormed. (This doesn’t have to be your “for sure” topic for your essay.)

11 Language Arts: Thursday 2-28 I.N. 18
In your own words, with what you know right now, what is a THESIS STATEMENT and where is it typically found? If you could change one thing about Oakwood, what would it be? Why? Have your Vocabulary Packet out and work on the first page if it isn’t finished.

12 Language Arts: Thursday 2-28 I.N. 18
Writing Situation:  In order to save money, your principal is thinking about canceling all field trips for the remainder of the year. Think about the advantages and disadvantages of school field trips as compared to the cost involved. Do you agree or disagree with this idea?  Write an opinion statement with the issue and your point of view. Directions for Writing: Now, write a letter to your principal persuading him or her to continue or discontinue school field trips. Give reasons to support your position. CHALLENGE: Use as many vocabulary words as you can in your answer!

The Great Vocabulary Challenge!!!!!

14 Language Arts: Friday 3-1 I.N. 19

Read through the page and follow the directions and steps to find your audience. (I.N. page 19) Take this time to really think about a topic you are passionate about, if you haven’t decided already. When you finish, read silently.
