1 Do Now Task Can you name any coastal defences that protect the coast against the sea?

2 Coastal Management Objective:
Compare different types of coastal management. Outcomes: draw and label different types of coastal management Assess each others work explain how they protect the coast Starter: Write a list of as many key words to do with coasts that you can think of The longest most accurate list gets 5 vivo points

3 Sketch of coastal management, Groynes
Groynes are wooden barriers at right angles to the beach. They last years and are a couple of metres tall Groynes slow longshore drift and encourage the build up of material creating a wider beach. The beach absorbs wave energy slowing down cliff erosion, protecting buildings and roads.

4 Swap your sketch with your partner and score their labels 1-4
Description Example 1 Have described Or labelled a feature. Wooden groynes sticking out into the sea 2 Use a geographical term to name the feature and describe it (with measurements). Wooden groynes up to a couple of metres high perpendicular to the cliff around 30-40m long 3 As well as describing and naming the feature you explain why it is there. Groynes encourage the formation of a beach by stopping Longshore Drift 4 Link the feature to other variables A beach acts as a barrier to prevent cliff erosion protecting the coastline. By preventing Longshore Drift the supply of sediment to other beaches along the coast is affected creating greater erosion down the coast Give them some feedback on how they could improve them for the next sketch

9 Coastal Management Why do we need to Manage the coast?
I can draw and label different types of coastal management I can describe different types of coastal management; groynes, sea walls and rock armour Why do we need to Manage the coast? Watch Holderness Video

10 Plenary What key words can we add to our list?
