We want to try to get the message across that reading doesn’t have to be a drawn out, tedious task and that skills can be developed with good questioning and helping chdn to think about what they are being told/what they are finding out in a text

That the text is the same each time you read it
That the marks on the page tell you what to say
That language is composed of separable words
The words you say represent the words on the page (1-2-1 correspondence)
That words are made up of letters
Writing conventions (left to right & top to bottom)
To be able to use ‘book’ language
A reliable sight vocabulary
The ability to read pictures
Knowledge
Knowledge will develop differently in all children and in different stages

Encourage children to justify their thoughts and ideas. Enjoy ‘talking around’ what you read together – if your child truly understands what they read they will be able to relate to events, empathise with characters and enjoy what they read more.
