1 Mastering the New Math Standards
Presented By: Krystal Shaw, Ed.S School Improvement Specialist Pate’s Creek Elementary

2 “There’s a tendency for adults to label the math that they can do (such as identifying patterns, choosing between competing offers in a supermarket, and challenging statistics published by the government) as “common sense” and labeling everything they can’t do as “math”- so that being bad at math becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.” (Eastaway and Askew, 2010)

4 The Henry Teaching and Learning Standards (HTLS)

5 They Have to Do WHAT??? The Standards for Mathematical Practice
What It Says Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. What It Means Students can read the problem, understand it, and find a way to solve it. They don’t give up!

6 They Have to Do WHAT??? The Standards for Mathematical Practice
What It Says Reason abstractly and quantitatively. What It Means Students can THINK about numbers in a real-life situation and numbers by themselves.

7 They Have to Do WHAT??? The Standards for Mathematical Practice
What It Says Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. What It Means Students can explain WHY they found a solution and understand and/or correct others’ solutions.

8 They Have to Do WHAT??? The Standards for Mathematical Practice
What It Says Model with mathematics. What It Means Students can act out or make representations (diagrams, pictures, number sentences, etc.) of the problem.

9 They Have to Do WHAT??? The Standards for Mathematical Practice
What It Says Use appropriately tools strategically. What It Means Students know which tools they might need to solve a problem and use them to solve problems.

10 They Have to Do WHAT??? The Standards for Mathematical Practice
What It Says Attend to precision. What It Means Students use exact vocabulary in their math work and do not make careless errors. Students know when to use estimation.

11 They Have to Do WHAT??? The Standards for Mathematical Practice
What It Says Look for and make use of structure. What It Means Students can find patterns within math and use these to solve new problems.

12 They Have to Do WHAT??? The Standards for Mathematical Practice
What It Says Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning. What It Means Students can use the patterns they discover to create general “rules” to use again.

14 How would you solve it? Adalynn is collecting pennies for the Relay for Life fundraiser. So far, she has collected 347 pennies so far. Her goal is to collect 1,000 pennies. How many more pennies does she need to meet her goal?

15 How would you solve it? Seth is also collecting pennies for Relay for Life. He collected 246 pennies last week and 326 pennies this week. How many pennies has Seth collected?

16 How would you solve it? I bought 13 packages of doughnuts. There are 9 doughnuts in each package. How many doughnuts did I buy?

17 How would you solve it? McKinley needs to buy 114 cans of soda. How many 6-packs should she buy?

18 “When your child is explaining give them plenty of time to work through to the end of their explanation. Often the first error that gets revealed is actually the result of some other fundamental misunderstanding.” (Eastaway and Askew, 2010)
