2 This is not your usual weather forecast. Big storms are brewing
This is not your usual weather forecast. Big storms are brewing. Your umbrella won't help, but you might want to keep a flashlight handy. These storms are coming from the sun. It's raining down a huge amount of radiation. We're safe, but it could affect power grids, radios and satellites. Experts say the combined energy from two recent solar events will arrive at Earth on Saturday, prompting a strong geomagnetic storm watch. The sun is a giant ball of gas: 92.1% hydrogen and 7.8% helium. Every now and then, it spits out a giant burst of radiation called a coronal mass ejection. These ejections are sometimes associated with solar flares, the most explosive events in the solar system. The sun has released two ejections in the past two days. The energy from those two ejections is heading toward Earth. Earth's atmosphere usually protects us humans, but solar storms can also knock out power, interfere with GPS and radio communications, including those on commercial airliners, and damage satellites.

3 In Other News A judge has found Oscar Pistorius guilty of culpable homicide, the South African term for unintentionally -- but unlawfully -- killing a person. It's akin to negligent killing. Friday's verdict comes a day after Judge Thokozile Masipa cleared Pistorius of murder in the killing of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp. The customary maximum prison sentence for culpable homicide is 15 years, but a typical sentence is five to eight years, said Kelly Phelps, a CNN legal analyst. Sentencing could be weeks away and will come after more legal argument. Children with severe respiratory illnesses are flooding the emergency room of USA Children's and Women's Hospital in Mobile, Alabama. Doctors started noticing an increase in children with severe colds and troubling breathing in mid-August, said Dr. Jason Richerson. Since then, more than 340 children have been treated at the hospital. Around 45 of them were admitted. Doctors told WPMI that these patients are usually in the hospital for one to two days; others are being treated and released the same day. Enteroviruses are quite common in September, but doctors believe a particular type of enterovirus, Enterovirus D68, is causing more problems this fall than in years past. More than 80 people in six states have been confirmed to have respiratory illness caused by EV-D68. These states are Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky and Missouri.
