Intentions for success:
We will be successful when we describe the chemical and physical properties of matter. Sept. 5, 2018 Vocab: chemical property, Warm up: What are three types of common evidence that a chemical change has occurred? formation of precipitate
2
Ch. 9 - Classification of Matter
I. Describing Matter (45-62) Physical Property Physical Change Chemical Change Chemical Property
3
A. Physical Property A characteristic of a substance that can be observed without changing its identity. can be used to separate mixtures EX: magnetism, density
4
A. Physical Properties Examples: magnetism, density, Viscosity, Conductivity, Malleability, Hardness, melting point, boiling point, filtration, distillation, insulator Silicon dioxide is solid at room temp, Methanol is a liquid. Which has the higher melting point?
5
B. Physical Change A change in the form of a substance without changing its chemical makeup. properties remain the same reversible can be used to separate mixtures EX: dissolving, grinding, filtering
6
C. Chemical Change A change in the chemical identity of a substance.
properties change irreversible Signs: color change, formation of a gas/solid, release of light/heat EX: burning, rusting
7
D. Chemical Property A characteristic that indicates whether a substance can undergo a specific chemical change. EX: flammability, reactivity
8
Create a data table for these Physical Properties
Word Definition Malleable Viscosity Conductivity Insulator Flammability
9
Review Questions How can knowing physical properties of matter be useful? What allows mixtures to be separated by distillation? Tell me about an oven mitt. What properties does it have?
