Who are we?
What is the ELL Program?
ELL (English Language Learning) Services are specially designed instructional programs that provide language learners access to the curriculum. Most of the instruction revolves around listening and speaking, with additional support in reading and writing.
Qualified incoming students will
take the ELPA screener which will determine a student’s language proficiency level and whether or not they will qualify for ELL services.
This year our focus will be to push in and work with classroom teachers and ELL students in their classroom. This could be co-teaching with the teacher, small group work with peers or individualized student instruction.
We are Shelby Buker and Katherine Dynes and we will be the ELL team at Cougar Ridge this year! Shelby will be full time at Cougar Ridge and Katherine will be working part-time here and part-time with her students at Newcastle Elementary. ELPA Scores
ELL Open House
Recently, the district sent home the ELPA Screener test results. The results show the students’ proficiency in our four language domains: Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening. If you have any questions about your child’s scores please don’t hesitate to contact us!
On Tuesday October 30th, we will be holding an event in the library from 10 – 10:45 am. At our Open House, we will discuss the Cougar Ridge ELL Program and how we, as teachers, are providing English language support to your children. We will cover the following information:

Conferences
Ways to Support at Home
Thank you for attending your child’s conference! We enjoyed meeting many of you and celebrating your child’s growth, as well as, sharing ways that we can support them moving forward. If you were unable to attend a conference or if we were unable to attend, please feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns.
At conferences and in meetings, the most common question that we receive is: “How can I help my child at home?” Your support in their English Language Development is crucial, and we GREATLY appreciate your support.
Here are some ideas:
Use your home language to speak, read stories, ask and answer questions about new ideas. Your child's English will be stronger if he/she has strong skills in your home language.
Be involved! Ask questions and support classroom activities and homework.
Build vocabulary! When reading together, have your child highlight unknown words and/or use context clues to find their meaning.
