Describe the problems Americans faced immediately after the war. Analyze how these problems contributed to the Red Scare

3 Women after the War Loss of an economic boom
Faced competition for jobs with newly returning soldiers Fewer women would be in the workforce

4 African Americans Competed with returning soldiers for jobs and housing Experienced race riots in several cities Faced segregation in many areas

5 Inflation After the war, Americans rushed to buy consumer goods
Goods became scarce causing a rise prices Wages did not rise, and workers began to strike for higher wages and shorter work days.

6 Red Scare ( Red = Communists)
Fear of Radicals and communists Palmer Raids- thousands of people arrested, some radicals, others just immigrants from southern and eastern Europe Civil liberties were violated and ignored ACLU starts to defend those accused. American Civil Liberties Union

8 After the War The Recession ended quickly Stock prices rose rapidly
More people could afford goods and factories adjusted to produce more goods. One good in particular became a popular item.

10 Henry Ford Didn’t invent mass production but perfected it
Put his cars on assembly lines, having each worker add something to the construction of the automobile After 2 years, assembly lines lowered manufacturing time from 12 hours to 90 minutes per car

11 Henry Ford The Price of the Car Fell from $350 by to $290 by 1927 First car average Americans could afford. By % of Americans owned an automobile compared to 10 % in 1919.

12 Henry Ford Doubles the wages from $2.35 dollars per day to $5 dollars per day 9 to 8 hour days and gave weekends off. Why shorten the work day? So more Americans could travel in their Model T on the weekends!
